Sustainable Darkroom: The Futures Residency - Open Call
The Sustainable Darkroom invites 5 UK-based individuals to join a funded 6-month residency exploring innovative and sustainable systems in photography and filmmaking. The residency includes a grant, mentorship, and culminates in an exhibition and symposium. Deadline: October 23, 2026.
The residency seeks research and development projects focused on innovative, sustainable systems in photography and filmmaking. Topics may include darkroom systems, waste management, legal frameworks, AI, and more. Proposals should envision radical and unorthodox solutions, with prototypes or blueprints accepted. Two places are reserved for artists based in the North of England, and two for disabled artists.
Applicants must submit a proposal outlining their project, including research questions, methodology, and expected outcomes. The residency will take place from April to October 2027, culminating in an in-person exhibition and symposium in partnership with Nepho Network and Sunderland University.
The residency offers:
- £3400 grant
- Bi-weekly seminars and mentorship

- Travel stipend and accommodation for exhibition
- Inclusion in an online publication
